Stream of my fathers, sweetly still
The Sunset rays thy valley fill;
Poured slantwise down the long defile,
Wave, wood and spire beneath them smile.

Tours

John Greenleaf Whittier 1807-1892 was a citizen of Amesbury MA for 56 years, from 1836 to his death. He did much of his most important work from this home, entertained prominent politicians, abolitionists, writers and artists in the famous Garden Room, walked twice a week from his home to the Friends Meeting House for worship, and strolled the streets of Amesbury to talk with and be with his friends and fellow citizens of Amesbury.

Visit the John Greenleaf Whittier Home, site of one of America's greatest poets and abolitionists. The house and the furnishings remain nearly the same as when the Whittier family lived here. Whittier wrote most of his poetry and prose, including his masterpiece Snow Bound, in the Garden Room.

The house has been owned and maintained by the Whittier Home Association since 1918. It serves as a landmark to the Quaker poet and the anti-slavery champion who made outstanding contributions to the life and literature of this country.
